Council Initiative Completes Another Makeover in St Austell Town Centre

Cornwall Council’s Townscape Heritage Scheme, an initiative which offers grants for quality traditional repairs to key historic buildings in our town and reinstates shopfronts and signs, has recently completed another fantastic makeover.

Slice Pizza located at no.s 2 – 6 Bodmin Road, leading in to Fore Street, has undergone an amazing shop front transformation by the initiative. Bespoke ceramic tiling and mosaics have been installed to enhance the shopfront on this key gateway building. The shopfront stall riser tiling, depicts animals and human feet. The two front cast iron columns, have also been clad in floral mosaics.

Marion Brandis, artist for the Austell Project’s – Clay Planet also on Fore Street, carried out the work as part of the Townscape Heritage funded work. Marion comments on the commission:

“The tiles below the windows show the little dramas of street life that play out at this level, where the animals are shown to be busy with their own lives. The columns framing the entrance add tactile and colourful accents. I hope that everything will lift the spirits of passers-by, and make them smile”.
